This presentation will provide new perspectives to those in the Nursing and Respiratory Therapy
field on the impact of COPD for patients in the healthcare system. At the end of this educational
activity, participants will:
•        Understand complexities of healthcare that can alter optimal patient care
•        Understand the complexity of COPD management from the patient’s perspective
•        Identify personal ideas for changing the care of a COPD patient
•        Have an increased awareness of the benefits of collaborative care
•        Understand living with COPD from the patient’s perspective

Dr. Harkaway has spent 25 years caring for patients with chronic pulmonary disease. After
completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor in 1976, he
graduated from the Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1980. Dr. Harkaway completed
his Residency in Internal Medicine at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor in 1984 and his
Fellowship in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in 1986 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. He
is currently a practicing physician with the Pulmonary and Critical Care Division of Michigan
Multispecialty Physicians PC and serves as the President of the Huron Valley Physicians
Association in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
